Does disaster insurance have a role in climate adaptation?

This briefing explores the current debates around insurance mechanisms to assess how disaster insurance supports community responses to climate change, and calls for priority to be given to community-based disaster risk reduction.

It examines: (i) the proposals for disaster insurance at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC); (ii) the example of the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) in responding to extreme weather events; (iii) its structure and parameters; (iv) the research findings in terms of limitations and contributions to disaster risk
